Walt Hicks

Walter Hicks, March 23, 1940-February 14, 2015.  Commissioned from ROTC at North Carolina State University in 1962. Served 21 years in the US Army and retired as a LTC in 1983.  He was Field Artillery, Airborne and a Senior Army Aviator qualified in both fixed and rotory wing aircraft. He served two tours in the Republic of Viet Nam. His first tour was at Dong Ba Thin where he flew almost daily combat missions in the UH-1(Huey), moving troops in and out of combat landing zones.  His second tour, at Can Tho and Soc Trang, he served as the assistant Battalion Operations Officer and the Battalion Headquarters Company Commander. Walter had many other assignments in the US and Germany.  He was an Honor graduate of the Advance Field Artillery Officer’s Course and the Command and General Staff school at Ft Leavenworth, KS.  His decorations included the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, 9 Air Medals and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.  He was a soldier’s soldier of the highest quality.  To know him was to respect him.
