Fresh out of High School DeWayne joined the Army. He spent 3 years at Fort Campbell Kentucky, 101st Airborne Division Assault, 11B10 Infantryman. After completing his 3 years active duty he went back home to Minnesota for roughly a year before moving to Idaho where he joined the Army National Guard. While in the Army National Guard DeWayne serviced as a Combat Engineer then transferred to tanks as a 19K3O M1 Armor Crewman. June 2004 DeWayne began the extensive training required for deployment to Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this time his unit was changed from tanks to humvees. He deployed with A/3-116 Cavalry, Ontario, OR. By November of 2004 the unit was in country. While in Iraqi the 116th established medical clinics, schools, and safe passages for Iraqi citizens. They also helped train the Iraqi Army & Police Force to include doing search & seizures, and security details .
While in Iraq DeWayne was involved in five different concussive events to walk thankfully be able to away on the advance plane home. Over his 20year dedication to the US Army DeWayne as been awarded the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, national Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Medal w/ M Device, Combat Action Badge, Army Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Air Assault Badge, Army Lapel Button, Expert Badge M16 Rifle, and Expert Badge Hand Grenade, Army Reserves Component Achievement Medal.
