Charles R. Chandler-Born and raised in rural Louisiana, Chuck Chandler received a congressional appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point, NY after two years at Louisiana Tech.   Chuck achieved his  childhood dream when  he entered West Point in the summer of 1958.  A brilliant cadet , Chuck graduated in 1962 ranking 8th out of a graduating class of 601 cadets.  His  excellent academic record resulted in Chuck receiving a prestigious  Olmstead Scholarship.  Before taking advantage of his scholarship, he went to the Field Artillery Officer’s Basic Course, and then to Ranger and Airborne School.  His first full time assignment was at Ft Bragg, NC where he was a part of the 82d Airborne Division.  In the fall of 1984, Chuck was  assigned as an Advisor to the Viet Namese Army in the  the Mekong  Delta.  As a result he received a Bronze Star, an Air Medal, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.  With his combat tour behind him, Chuck was able to take advantage of his Omstead Scholarship.  He choose to attend the Graduate University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to study the Portuguese language.  During this time Charles Chandler’s life was taken as he was violently gunned down by terrorist in front of his own home.   This was a great officer, a wonderful friend and a loving husband and father.  Had he lived he was destined for great things.  He is greatly missed.
