2000’s – PRESENT

As the new millennium was kicking off devastation would soon hit America. On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Often referred to as 9/11, the attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defining the presidency of George W. Bush. Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., including more than 400 police officers and firefighters.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the American-led international effort to oust the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and destroy Osama bin Laden’s terrorist network based there, began on October 7. Within two months, U.S. forces had effectively removed the Taliban from operational power, but the war continued, as U.S. and coalition forces attempted to defeat a Taliban insurgency campaign based in neighboring Pakistan. Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the September 11th attacks, remained at large until May 2, 2011, when he was finally tracked down and killed by U.S. forces at a hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan. In June 2011, President Barack Obama announced the beginning of large-scale troop withdrawals from Afghanistan, with a final withdrawal of U.S. forces tentatively scheduled for 2014.

Even though the official “war” is over and troops have started to withdraw since, the conflict raged on. The new “War in Afghanistan”, January, 2015–present, refers to the period of the war in Afghanistan following the 2001–2014 phase led by the United States of America. “Global War on Terrorism” also seems to be firing up again but with the world’s focus on ISIS instead of on Al-Qaeda. In February 2015, the headquarters element of the U.S. 7th Infantry Division began to deploy to Afghanistan.

On 19 March 2015, it was reported by Reuters that the U.S. military bases in Kandahar and Jalalabad are likely to remain open beyond the end of 2015, a senior U.S. official said, as the Federal Government of the United States considers slowing its military withdrawal to help the new government fight the Taliban. The anticipated policy reversal reflects U.S. support of Afghanistan’s new and more cooperative president, Ashraf Ghani, and a desire to avoid the collapse of local security forces that occurred in Iraq after the U.S. withdrawal there.

Serving Beyond the Element of War

The US Military helps in many other ways in which we can not take for granted or forget. As well as the wars and conflicts, the United States Military Forces have engaged in several smaller missions including both conflict and humanitarian efforts around the world. They not only help countries in time of war but they often come to the rescue during national disasters and other national crisis with supplies, personnel and logistical support.

In 2014 The US troops took post in Africa to fight the epidemic of Ebola. Regardless of the threat of personal infection our military selflessly went to help those who were sick and dying.
Also thousands of troops have shown up early to some of the world’s worst disasters over the past decade, including tsunamis in Japan and Indonesia and a deadly earthquake in Haiti. We also see these humanitarian efforts her at home with natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the widespread tornado epidemic across the midwest recently.

When civil unrest breaks out stateside the US military is there to serve and protect. During the Watts riots of 1965, 4000 members of the California Army National Guard provided police support to help protect the local people. In 1967, the Detroit riot, also known as the 12th Street riot, broke out and was a violent public disorder that turned into a civil disturbance in Detroit, Michigan. It was one of America’s deadliest and most destructive riots in United States history, lasting five days and surpassing the violence and property destruction of Detroit’s 1943 race riot.To help end the disturbance, Governor George W. Romney ordered the Michigan National Guard into Detroit, and President Lyndon B. Johnson sent in Army troops. The result was 43 dead, 1,189 injured, over 7,200 arrests, and more than 2,000 buildings destroyed. Again in 1992, a major riot broke out after the Rodney King brutality. Widespread looting, assault, arson and murder occurred during the riots, and estimates of property damage were over $1 billion. The rioting ended after soldiers from the California Army National Guard, the 7th Infantry Division, and Marines from 1st Marine Division were called in to stop the rioting when the local police could not handle the situation. In total, 53 people were killed during the riots and over 2,000 people were injured

The military also has a long history of providing efforts to rebuild war torn communities around the world. Civilians pay a heavy toll when their countries are at war and it the military that steps up to help rebuild. The United States Military Forces have been an integral part of creating and defending our Country and protecting others around the work. They are here to protect and serve whether we are at war or in peace and no matter what kind of emergency situation may occur.
